St. Catherine’s Artisan Market

St Catherine’s Artisan Market launched in 2009  on Frome’s cobbled Catherine Hill. Now in its third year, the Artisan market is bigger and better than ever with up to 75 stallholders each month. Traders

eon the slopes of pretty Somerset town, Frome, only 15 miles from Bath.

Come along and peruse the beautiful stalls selling a wide range of locally made produce, including sausages, bread and flowers, clothing, skincare and gifts, designer jewellery, ceramics and glassware.  It is held during the summer months from April to September with a Christmas special in December.  You will always find the market on the first Sunday of the month from 10 am until 2pm.

The unique and slightly crazy element of the market is provided by the topography of the hills of Stony Street and Catherine Hill.  Stallholders are very resourceful with their use of bricks, blocks and planks to create stable platforms for their beautiful displays and the effort of walking up to the very top of the market is rewarded with the outdoor seating provided by the Little Red Café.

The market has become a very popular event in the Frome calendar, attracting over a thousand visitors over the morning even when it rains.  It has been featured by the Guardian newspaper and is regularly visited by local celebrities and artistic types.

Frome Flea Market

Due to public demand, the organisers have introduced a sister-market to St. Catherine’s Artisan Market:  the Frome Flea.  Running on the same day as the Artisan Market (first Sunday of the month, between April and September), the Frome Flea sets up in the Market Yard car park, outside Frome library.

The Frome Flea is a quality second-hand market, with traders selling antiques, vintage clothes, collectables and homeware. Running the Flea simultaneously with the Artisan Market means that visitors can have a fantastic day out shopping, browsing or socialising with the whole family.

The two markets are both run by St. Catherine’s Artisan Market Ltd and promoted together, but there is be a marked difference between the two: the Artisan Market is full of designer/makers, artists and local food and drinks producers, whilst the Frome Flea is solely second-hand goods, with the inclusion of a few hot food and drinks stalls to keep the bargain-hunters fuelled.
