A market on a hill? Back in 2010

Catherine Hill will be welcoming the return of the St Catherine’s Artisan Market this Easter.

The markets which began in April 2009 confounded sceptics; several hundred visitors were crammed into the narrow streets and despite the recessionary gloom, the sun shone and shoppers were found to be spending money on the delights of the stalls and the shops.
Allison Herbert who manages the markets said: ‘We are thrilled to have new chocolates, new cakes and new designer makers joining us for 2010 and we are looking forward to a great season.’

Catherine Hill has long enjoyed a reputation of a destination shopping experience offering an eclectic mix of vintage, artisans and niche retailing.
The market has been successful in letting more people become aware of Catherine Hill’s secret treasures and was even featured in The Guardian last year. It was set up as a not-for-profit organisation with any profits to be reinvested in the historic centre of Frome.

Markets take place between 10am and 2pm on the first Sunday of the month through the summer months until October.

None of the stallholders seem to be challenged by the engineering requirements of holding a market on a hill, with some individuals displaying great imagination in the layout of their stalls. The public seem to manage to struggle up the hill with their shopping bags rewarded by the Little Red Cafe at the top or the chocolate and cupcakes at the bottom. All agree that the market is a jolly way to spend a Sunday morning in Frome. Come and try it on April 4th 2010.
